Earthquake that shakes Turkey injures 50 people

SigerNusantara | Istanbul - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake that rocked northwestern Turkey on Wednesday left 50 people injured and damaged several buildings in Duzce province, the government's disaster agency and official news agency said.

There were no reports of death or major damage in the quake which occurred at 04:08 local time, which was centered in Golyaka, a district in Duzce, about 200 km east of Istanbul.

"We have almost completed our inspection of the villages around Golyaka. No major damage was reported; only a few barns were damaged in those places," Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told TRT Haber.

"There was a power outage during the earthquake but the authorities are restoring it now," he said.

The Duzce courthouse was among about eight buildings in the area damaged, the Anadolu news agency said. Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said it had sent thousands of blankets and tents to the quake area, where 37 people were injured in Duzce. People were also injured in Zonguldak, Bursa and Istanbul.

Earlier the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and was at a depth of 2 km.

Turkey is crossed by fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. In 1999, two strong earthquakes killed 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey. In 2020, more than 100 people died in an earthquake in the western Turkish city of Izmir.
